South of England's Remarkable Heath-land Links
July 6 to 15, 2012

This part of England is often overlooked by the golfing tourist. Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex have been outstanding heath-land courses built in the late 1800's by renowned architects of the period; such as Harry Colt, James Braid, Harold Hilton and Arthur Croome. We start off in a beautiful part of the Hampshire with Braid's North Hants Golf Club, Colts Blackmoor Club and Croome's Liphook Club, all three are typical of the area with tree-line fairways, gorse and lots of heather; courses not demanding in distance. The renowned West Sussex Golf Club, just across the Hampshire County line, is perhaps the highlight of the tour and is worthy of a full day's play. Bernard Darwin called it a little sandy jewel set in Sussex clay.

Then the tour moves west past Southhampton into Dorset, with a stop on the way to play Hayling, a delightful, testy links with the views across to the Ise of Wight. From a base in the sea coast town of Poole, we will play Ferndown by Harold Hilton, Broadstone by Colt and Dunn, Parkstone by Willie Park Jr. and finally Colts, Isle of Purbeck, a broom covered links on the edge of a Slent nature preserve.

Lodging is in two hotels, four nights at each hotel, starting at the four-star Lythe Hill Hotel and Spa(http://www.lythehill.co.uk/). Haslemere, close to the Hampshire trio of courses and West Sussex links, is a luxurious country-house hotel set in a tranquil twenty-two acres of Hampshire countryside with a double rosette restaurant on the premises. The RNLI College on Poole Harbor is an interesting educational institution and comes highly recommended(http://www.mli.org.uk) RNLI is a life boat training college with excellent accommodations, restaurant and bar.
